Day 16: 21st Dec

sunny 27 °C

At 8am we had our final visit to the boulangerie for breakfast. Grant had a croissant and Dad couldn't resist a chocolate eclair!
Rosita came over to the villa to say cheerio and then we made our way to the airport. We handed back our car to Odile at Gumbs Car Rental and gave her a small Christmas present.
We had a bit of time so we had a coffee in the airport cafe and watched some planes take off and land. We caught the 10:40am flight to St. Martin which turned into a private flight as the three of us were the only ones onboard!
Over in St. Martin we had an early lunch at the Sunset bar: grilled mahi, crispy shrimp and a mahi burger.
Our flight to Newark was delayed which meant we had a bit of a panic connecting to our Edinburgh flight but luckily we made it and arrived home as scheduled on Sunday morning.

Day 15: 20th Dec

We popped over the road and collected breakfast from the boulangerie which was an almond croissant and a pineapple tart.
Grant and I went for a walk along Flamands beach and checked out a few villas including a villa over at Grand Fond. We had lunch at the villa which involved salads and wine.
In the afternoon we sunbathed and walked along Lorient beach. We also spent some time doing the sad duty of packing our cases.
Our final dinner was booked at 7:30pm at Santa Fe. After a warm welcome we handed over some malt whisky and chocolates to Manu.
We ordered a bottle of white chateauneuf du pape. I ordered the delicious crab and lobster cake to start followed by tuna tataki. Dad had gorgozola gnocchi to start followed by wahoo with coriander and ginger. Grant also had crab and lobster cake to start and then the wahoo with coriander and ginger. We shared two chocolate fondant desserts, coffee and then complimentary vanilla rums. A wonderful final meal!
We managed to finish watching the Jodie Foster film when we got back to the villa.

Day 14: 19th Dec

We had a leisurely breakfast at the villa. We got changed and then Grant and I picked up our friend Julien at 11:30am. We drove over to our villa and introduced him to Dad and had a drink outside. We had bought a salad from the boulangerie for Dad's lunch which Dad had at the villa.
We headed over with Julien to la Gloriette and had lunch overlooking the beach. On the way back we stopped at the Marche U supermarket and helped Julien with his shopping list. We took him back to his apartment and helped him put his shopping away. He showed us the view from the communal pool overlooking St. Jean.
We got home about 5pm and then got ready for dinner at Pipiri Palace in Gustavia.
This creole restaurant turned out to be one of our best meals of the holiday. To start, we all shared a portion of crab cakes and cod accras. The crab cakes were absolutely delicious. Dad and I both had creole shrimp for our main course which was served with a delicious vegetable rice.
Grant had a mahi mahi curry which he really enjoyed.
We finished the meal with a complimentary vanilla rum.
Back at the villa we watched a film called 'The Brave One' with Jodie Foster until I fell asleep on the sofa!

Day 13: 18th Dec

We had breakfast at the villa and then all three of us headed over to Pointe Milou and did a circular short walk around the point. We took photos and admired the view.
We headed over to Colombier and bought a quiche and some bread for lunch. Plus we stopped at the supermarket for a few more salads.
We had a lovely salad lunch at the villa and then relaxed for a couple of hours around the villa.
Just after 3pm, Grant and I headed over to Marigot beach to snorkel. Considering the conditions on the rest of the island were far from perfect, we actually had a really good time and saw some stingrays, turtles and an over-friendly remora that I think wanted to clean us!
We got back to the villa at 4:30pm in time for Rosita's visit at 5pm. She shared some wine with us and we chatted for over an hour. We handed over our Christmas presents for Rosita and her husband, Jean-Paul.
Julien had kindly booked us a table at his restaurant the Wall House at 7:30pm so we drove into Gustavia. The Wall House is in a wonderful location overlooking the harbour and we were greeted warmly when we arrived and we were given a table overlooking the harbour.
We started our meal with a complimentary delicious grapefruit cocktail. To start, I had an arugula salad and Grant and Dad both had the homemade gnocchi which came in puff pastry and a delicious creamy pesto sauce. They both thought it was amazing.
For main course, Dad chose the duck in a honey sauce. Grant had the mahi mahi served with mashed potato and I had the tuna tataki.
We selected a bottle of pouilly fume to accompany our meal which had been recommended by Frederico. Just before our starters arrived we were formally introduced to Julien's father, Bernard Tatin who was the perfect gentleman.
For dessert, my Dad chose a French speciality called Conversation, which he loved. Grant and I shared a beautifully light coconut cake which tasted like a macaroon. We all had coffee and a complimentary rum to finish. After our meal we took a wander around the harbour where we could see a few parties taking place on some of the mega sized boats. We did some window shopping and then headed back to the villa where we enjoyed a nightcap.

Day 12: 17th Dec

The day started well, we got a raspberry tart and an almond croissant from the boulangerie across the road and then Grant and I headed over to Grand Fond where we did a wonderful walk to the natural pools. It was rugged and breezy there with the waves crashing against the rocks.
We got back to the villa and got changed. We drove over to Saline and went to Grain de Sel for lunch. We were greeted warmly by the waiter and he talked us through the specials board. I chose the grain de sel salad from the menu which was served with gin soaked prawns and exotic fruits. Dad and Grant both chose dishes from the specials board. Dad's dish was a creole grilled marlin and swordfish dish. The marlin in particular was wonderful and Dad was delighted with his dish. Grant opted for the tuna wok dish which was a tuna stir fry served with rice. Grant raved about this dish and said it was one of the best tuna dishes he had ever had.
The meal had been so good that we decided to have a dessert. Dad had some pineapple with coconut ice cream. Grant and I had a couple of local ice creams: seagrape and corossol which were both tasty. We finished our meal with a couple of complimentary homemade rums. Dad was very impressed with the ginger one and the vanilla was excellent too.
Back at the villa we had some coffee.
We relaxed and went for a walk along the beach in the afternoon. About 5pm Grant and I went to Marche U to collect some more salads for dinner and a baguette. We had a light dinner at home.
At 7:30pm we headed over to St. Jean to pick up our friend Julien from his apartment overlooking St. Jean. We drove into Gustavia and had cocktails at le Carre. We spent over three hours chatting and getting to know Julien better. The conversation flowed and we met a couple of his friends including Natalie, who was English and invited us to a drinks reception at her art gallery on Friday evening. Le Carre is actually owned by Julien's Dad's former business partner so we were treated very well indeed. At the end of the evening, we dropped Julien off at home and gave him some Christmas presents. We then drove home and went to bed.
